The P vs. NP problem
نویسنده
چکیده
The resounding success of computers has often led to some common misconceptions about “computer science” — namely that it is simply a technological endeavor driven by a search for better physical material and devices that can be used to build smaller, faster, computers. Without trivializing this important quest, this article would like to highlight the complementary science behind computing: namely the search for efficient algorithms (or programs or procedures or software, depending on the readers preference) and the profound implications of this science, not only to the technology of computing, but almost all other disciplines including mathematics, physics and other physical sciences, as well as the social sciences including economics, psychology and indeed, even philosophy! In this article we will attempt to introduce some of the very basic elements of the theory of computing starting with elementary examples of computational tasks that everyone is familiar with. We will then describe Turing’s contributions in the 1930s that led to the development of both computers and a theory of computers. We will conclude with a description of the more modern theory of efficient computing from the 1970s leading to the question “Is P = NP?”. We will explain the question, its significance and the important consequences of its resolution (depending on how the question is resolved).

Independence of P vs. NP in regards to oracle relativizations
Previously in “P is a proper subset of NP” [Meek Article 1 2008] and “Analysis of the Deterministic Polynomial Time Solvability of the 0-1-Knapsack Problem” [Meek Article 2 2008] the present author has demonstrated that some NP-complete problems are likely to have no deterministic polynomial time solution. In this article the concepts of these previous works will be applied to the relativizatio...

متن کاملOn the structure of the class NP
A new class UF of problems is introduced, strictly included in the class NP, which arises in the analysis of the time verifying the intermediate results of computations. The implications of the introduction of this class are considered. First of all, we prove that P NP and establish that it needs to consider the problem “P vs UF” instead the problem “P vs NP”. Also, we determine the set-theor...

This is the third article in a series of four articles dealing with the P vs. NP question. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that although the oracle relativizations of the NP complexity class eliminate some methods as possible routes to a solution, the methods used in the first two articles of this series are not affected by oracle relativizations. Furthermore, the solution to the P v...
متن کاملP vs NP Problem in the field anthropology
This is an attempt of a new kind of anthropology, inspired by assumption that P is not NP, and, where anthropological field (experimental) study is considered as a search of a new complexity classes, in particularly, complexity class M.
